Messiness

We live in a messy world. We are surrounded by messy situations in our relationships, our families, our friendships, our parenting, our bodies, our hearts, our priorities, our businesses, our jobs, our schools, our homes, our churches, our government, our country, our world – it is not hard to feel down about the mess things are in. This is no surprise to God though. The world is not how he intended it to be. We live with sin in our world and in a broken relationship with our…

Citizenship

My family and I recently arrived in New Zealand after spending our entire lives as residents and citizens of the United States. We’ve had to adjust to new ways of doing things and new ways of thinking about the world. Often, some event will remind me of the way things were done in America and create a longing for the things I miss. I tolerate most diet fizzy drinks, but I actually like Diet Dr. Pepper. Unfortunately, New Zealand doesn’t sell it. My favorite restaurant, Skyline Chili, is…

Shadows

Shadows

Shadows My eyes shifting around me Always followed by shadows There is no escaping their folds, Cast by your glaring brightness The closer I come, the thicker they fall Hanging off the skin of my back Dragging me down, gripping and tearing But as I look to you they disappear I had thought: the brighter you shine, The tighter their hold Now I see: the brighter you shine The further they dissolve Light pours through the shadows, Tearing the veil…

Tender Hearted

The miracle and becoming tender hearted The disciples had been out with Jesus and had seen the miracle of feeding thousands of people with five loaves and two fish.  After everyone had eaten they gathered up twelve baskets of left overs.   Jesus then told them to get into the boat and go ahead of him towards the other side of the lake.  As night fell Jesus was still on land and the disciples were out on the lake and having…

Who do you say I am?

Last Sunday I spoke about the questions Jesus asks in the gospels. Theses questions invite us deeper into the heart of who Jesus is, and deeper into his mission. Further still the questions can challenge us and make us consider our own hearts and responses to his truth. One such example is found in Mark 8:27-30. Jesus and his disciples went on to the villages around Caesarea Philippi. On the way he asked them, “Who do people say I am?” They…

Drenched

Have you ever been drenched? Drenched right through every layer of clothing? Recently I was out walking and got caught in torrential rain. I kept trying to pull my hood tighter around my face as I could feel the water getting in and running down my body. My jacket was failing to protect me. As I reluctantly squelched along, out the corner of my hood I saw a lady walking past me. She looked like she was enjoying herself, she had stripped off her wet jacket and had tied…
