When we look back at Scripture no sin with the exception of Adam and Eve has received as much airplay as the actions contained in the David and Bathsheba story (2 Samuel 11 & 12). We are all capable of unacceptable behavior (sin) no matter who we are. Remember David was proclaimed as a man after Gods own heart (1 Sam. 13:14), the one who would take over the throne from a sinful Saul.
Paul writing to the believers in Corinth in chapter 10 gives them a brief history lesson about the sins of the ancients and sums up in 1 Cor. 10:12 saying, “Therefore let him who thinks he stands take heed lest he fall.”
It’s paramount to remember the seriousness of sin in our lives and take note of what God says about behaviour against His standards. When David was confronted by Nathan’s parable (2 Sam. 12:1-4), David recounted the law and its implications. Yet his own actions were far more serious and deserved a much greater sentence, however God relented and throughout Psalm 51 we see David’s contrite heart laid bare in petition to God’s mercy.
As Christians, we also have the promises such as 1 John 1: 9, and the wonderful opportunity to set things right and turn aside from things and attitudes that seek to destroy us.
