Shadows

Shadows

ShadowsShadows

My eyes shifting around me
Always followed by shadows
There is no escaping their folds,
Cast by your glaring brightness

The closer I come, the thicker they fall
Hanging off the skin of my back
Dragging me down, gripping and tearing
But as I look to you they disappear

I had thought: the brighter you shine,
The tighter their hold
Now I see: the brighter you shine
The further they dissolve

Light pours through the shadows,
Tearing the veil of darkness
Taking ripped and rotten flesh
Recasting in lightening and bronze

Quite early on I learnt of the necessity of feeling the weight of my sin. To understand there was nothing in me that would take me closer to God, closer to holiness, without his intervention. I wrote this after learning and meditating on the beautiful reason why all this was so.

“God made the one who did not know sin to be sin for us, so that in him we would become the righteousness of God.” 2 Corinthians 5:21

“For God, who said, “let light shine out of darkness”, has shone in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ. But we have this treasure in jars of clay to show that the surpassing power belongs to God and not us.” 2 Corinthians 4:6-7.

To know this is even more necessary, than understanding the state of our own hearts and to have eyes that see beyond it. To have a heart that knows the love of the one who has freed us from that sin and shone the light of God in us and through us to the world. I, the one who would prefer to hide in the darkness, have not only had his light cast on me, but he has set my soul on fire. What used to be a creature of darkness, now casting the light of God

“The sun shall be no more your light by day, nor for brightness shall the moon give you light; but the Lord will be your everlasting light, and your God will be your glory. Your sun shall no more go down, nor your moon withdraw itself; for the Lord will be your everlasting light, and your days of mourning shall be ended.”. Isaiah 60:19-20

And now, to live in the righteousness of Christ, to know His presence with joy, His never ending light
