Who’s that knocking at my door?

Who’s that knocking at my door?

We see in Revelation 3:20 the Lord ‘knocking at the door”.  A request asking us to allow Him in and His invitation to dine with Him.

What comes before regarding the church at Laodicea is intriguing. We see the terms hot, cold and lukewarm presented to a church that has clearly lost its way. The message from the Amen (Christ) was less than encouraging to say the least. Yet the temperature statements were not lost on them, they knew what lukewarm meant. They had to endure poor quality water and the reliance on surrounding cities. Hierapolis had hot water which was good for bathing and to relieve aliments, it was useful. The mountain springs from Colosse provided good cool water for drinking which refreshed the palate, it was useful. Yet by the time the cool spring water arrived at Laodicea it was contaminated by the local mineral deposits which made for a constant and visible reminder of its uselessness. The spitting out of the water was indeed something the residents knew well.

What Jesus was doing? He was challenging the self-sufficiency of the Christians. The city was well resourced yet it was in a state of spiritual poverty. It was proud, needing little assistance and sadly not even from the Lord. The solution, repentance! (v19). Our purpose is not to increase our luxury but to serve God’s purposes, locally, nationally and globally. Humility, and a heart and mind set on the obedience of His teaching is the order of that day and this.
